How It Works Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates
simple, decent houses alongside our homeowner (partner) families. Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (sweat equity) into building their Habitat house. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are
used to build still more Habitat houses.
![]() New Builds
Since 2000, Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity has built 13 homes throughout Northern Ocean County. Our most recently completed house, in Manchester Township, is now the home to a family with three little boys. Groundbreaking has already been completed and building has begun on our next home in Berkeley Township for a family of 10. Construction of our homes is the collaborative effort of many dedicated and loyal volunteers who give their time and expertise for the common goal of presenting an affordable, decent home to a deserving family. Families are selected by the Family Selection Committee based on NEED, ABILITY TO PAY and WILLINGNESS TO PARTNER. ![]() NRI Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI) is part of Habitat for Humanity
International's (HFHI) initiative to revitalize communities through additional programs. NRI seeks to revitalize neighborhoods
through A Brush With Kindness, Weatherization and Rehab. This continuum
of housing solutions allows us to help more low income families through simple repairs (ABWK). Often homeowners do not have
the money to maintain their home and make necessary repairs. What little money they do have must be spent on basic needs like
food, clothing, mortgage, taxes, healthcare etc. Since its inception in the spring of 2010, NOHFH has conducted 36 ABWKs.
Northern Ocean has also moved up the spectrum of NRI by completing extensive rehabs throughout our affiliate area.
